Application of Computer Technology Internet in Mental Health Care

Paul Emmelkamp (University of Amsterdam) reviews the application of computer technology and the use of the Internet in mental health care. A number of on-line screening devices have been developed for anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and substance abuse disorders, with great potential for clinical practice. On line assessment is generally equivalent to clinical assessment.

A number of studies have shown that self-help treatment programmes on stand-alone computers are as effective as routine clinical care. The Internet enhances the therapeutic possibilities of computers by offering feedback of therapists and more tailor-made treatment. A number of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have shown that Internet-based treatment is more effective than no-treatment and as effective as face-to-face treatment.

Research so far has been limited to anxiety disorders, burn-out, depression, headache, insomnia, tinnitus and obesity. Further, exposure through virtual reality has been found effective in a number of RCTs in specific phobias, but results with respect to the effects of the use of virtual reality techniques to other disorders are inconclusive. It is concluded that computer-driven assessment and treatment has many advantages and few disadvantages. A number of reasons are discussed which will preclude large-scale implementation of computer-driven assessment and therapy in the near future.

How to Pin a Program to Taskbar in Windows 7

In this tutorial I will show you how to pin a program to the Taskbar in Windows 7. One of the new features of Windows 7 is the ability to pin, or attach, a program to the Taskbar. This feature is very handy and makes the process of multitasking very fast and simple. When one of the pined programs is being used you can hover over the program icon and see a preview of the program window running. You can also change the order of the pined programs on the Taskbar by dragging it anywhere you want. Once a program is pined to the Taskbar you can remove it easily or change some other features of the program. Start multitasking now and follow our tutorial.

We’re a “little behind” with our iPad-killer, Sony admits

Sony says it fell behind on developing an iPad rival, but did admit something was in the works. Sony’s take on the iPad is believed to combine the features commonly found on netbooks, e-readers like the Amazon Kindle, and handheld-game machines like the iPod touch.

In other words, Sony’s portable device will most likely play downloadable games, read e-books, possibly run third-party apps – maybe even do your laundry – their finance chief Nobuyuki Oneda told the Wall Street Journal.

The new device could draw on Sony’s collective expertise in handheld videogame devices (the PSP), smartphones (Sony Ericsson phones), notebooks (the Vaio line), and e-readers (the Sony Reader). The success of such a gizmo, however, is all not guaranteed as the company is still pondering their next move, Oneda explained:

The question is how to combine those products into one attractive personal device. In the case of the iPad, we are a little behind.

OLPC teaming up with Marvell to bring XO-3 tablet to market

The One Laptop Per Child project, or OLPC, have long divided technology enthusiasts with their founder Nick Negroponte’s vision to bringing computer systems to developing nations, but philosophies aside, today’s announcement that they will be partnering with Marvell to try to deliver their latest XO-3 tablet design.

That design, in typical OLPC fashion, is probably wishful thinking. They envision it as a super-slim tablet with an 8.5 by 11 inch touchscreen, water resistant casing an an inductive charging system.

However, Marvell’s Moby platform, on which the XO-3 will be based, is decidedly more mainstream, and OLPC’s press release has dropped mentions of some of the XO-3’s more esoteric features. and only references video input, haptic feedback, multi-touch abilities and USB support for peripherals.

Samsung develops 18.5″ USB-powered LCD monitor

Samsung has already had some impressive technology on display at the SID 2010 conference. Yesterday we saw the unveiling of a 46″ transparent LCD TV, but today’s device demonstration is even more impressive.

The screen you see above is an 18.5″ Samsung monitor sitting next to a PC. It’s a pretty typical setup, but this monitor has one major difference over what we are used to — it is powered over USB 2.0 and requires no separate mains connection.

Samsung were able to achieve USB-only power by cutting the display’s power draw to just 6.3 watts. The panel itself is TN-mode and uses LED edge backlighting. It is capable of displaying a 1366 x 768 resolution, 250cd/m2 brightness, and has a 1000:1 contrast ratio.

The one downside to the display is its lifetime. Typical LCD panels have a usable life of around 50,000 hours, but this Samsung model only achieves a still respectable 30,000 hours.

Shuttle SX58J3 SFF is a mini PC case with lots of possibility

I’ve rarely seen a PC the size of a breadbox that I didn’t like, but with compression usually comes a dip in performance. Shuttle’s latest flagship SFF mini-PC, the Shuttle SX57J3 is capable of packing powerful hardware in a package only 33 x 21.5 x 19 centimeters in size…. but you’ll have to roll your own.

Spec-wise, the Shuttle SX57J3 is capable of using Intel’s hexacore Core i7-980X Extreme processor, or any other socket 1366 Core i7 CPU. Additionally, it contains two PCI-E x16 slots, which can be used by a single dual-slot card or two single-slot cards in CrossFireX or SLI configuration. There’s also two gigabit ethernet ports, two internal SATA bays with RAID support, and four SATA interfaces along with two eSATA, with a power connection for external SATA devices also thrown into the mix.
